Accomplished, Expert-Level Copy Editors and Proofreaders Sought for Educational Books Project
We are seeking expert-level Copy Editors and Proofreaders who will follow, interpret, and in some instances set new copy style guidelines for a large series of educational guides, based on the NYS Common Core/Next Generation State Standards Initiative.
The copy guidelines are still evolving; developing these guidelines is part of the job description.
Copy Editors and Proofreaders must be able to annotate, do spelling checks, and have expert level knowledge in grammar and punctuation. Consistency in words, phrases, and typographical elements is a main directive. Proofreaders must also have a strong understanding of page layout for print (styles, alignment, color consistency, art resolution issues, etc.).
Ideal candidates must be able to communicate directly and professionally with the project manager to determine style, content inaccuracies, and inconsistencies that the client will, most likely, supply in their original Word documents.
Consistency is a MUST throughout many education-oriented manuals, ranging from 36–400 pages each, regarding social studies, science, math, and other subjects.
The editor will be expected to suggest rewrites as needed for clarity and to keep style consistent in bibliographies, footnotes, and glossaries.
Appropriate educational background, knowledge/experience, and attention to detail.
Familiarity with AP style, Chicago style, and MLA.
Successful candidate must be able to annotate PDFs and have a general working knowledge of Mac, Word, InDesign, email, etc. This candidate should also be able to manage 2–3 freelancers and/or staff proofreaders.
This is a short- to long-term temporary position entailing 20–30 hours per week.
In-person interviews immediately.
Rate per hour for this position will be commensurate with your experience and ability. Send all supportive documents, résumé, and rate request to Kevin Green, Design Services.
